Safe Sober T-Shirt Contest Winner on Triad Today

Griff-Shuler-Julissa-Greer-and-David-Daggett

On Saturday, April 15th, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler Law appeared on Triad Today to talk about this year’s Safe Sober program. Their guest was Julissa Greer, a junior at Career Center High and Reagan High School, who is the 2023 T-Shirt Design Contest winner. Watch the segment to learn more about Julissa, the contest, and Safe Sober:

Now in its thirty-third year, the Safe Sober program is one of the largest and longest-running public initiatives of its kind in the United States. While the program has evolved and expanded over the past three decades, the mainstays of the program have not. They remain:

  • Raising awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol
  • Encouraging positive peer pressure
  • Providing leadership, guidance, and direction

Another classic aspect of the Safe Sober program is the yearly t-shirt design contest. The contest is open to local high school students, who submit designs for printing on thousands of shirts which are then distributed across the Triad. One student is selected annually, and they win a $1000 scholarship for their educational future. The shirts are immensely popular, and David Daggett likes to describe them as a “badge of honor” for participating students.

This year’s winner, Julissa Greer, was surprised with the news that she had won this year’s contest at a presentation at Career Center High. She received a framed shirt and her scholarship, and helped kick off the 2023 Safe Sober program!

Her winning design was actually her second entry; she made several iterations to submit. Her teacher, Mr. Mark Underwood, who encouraged her to enter, also received a $1000 grant for his classroom. Julissa plans on using part of her scholarship winnings to fund a 2024 school trip to Japan, and saving the rest for attending Forsyth Technical Community College.

Later in the episode, David also participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues.
