Car Insurance Tips on Triad Today

March-2021-Triad-Today

On Saturday, March 20th, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler Law appeared on Triad Today to share the facts everyone should have about car insurance. Watch the segment:

Car insurance is something many people purchase, and don’t think about again until an accident happens. If the worst does happen, you want to be covered in order to recover the costs for any medical bills, lost wages, or pain and suffering that may result from the accident. It’s a good idea to check your auto coverage from time to time. Now is an especially good time to review your coverage, given that many people are driving less due to the pandemic. Summer plans are also on the horizon for some – if you’re planning to travel out of state, you’ll want to check to see how your out-of-state coverage works.

North Carolina has minimum auto insurance requirements, as do most states. In North Carolina, the following coverage is mandated:

  • Bodily Injury per person – $30,000
  • Bodily Injury per accident – $60,000
  • Property Damage  – $25,000

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage is available in North Carolina.  Uninsured coverage is available beginning at $30,000 per person.  Underinsured Motorist coverage is available beginning at $50,000 per person.

Uninsured Motorist (“UM”) coverage comes into play when the other driver in an accident has no auto insurance. UM coverage is designed to protect you and help you receive compensation for your injuries associated with an accident. Startlingly, in North Carolina approximately 10% of drivers have no insurance whatsoever. This number is even higher in other states – for example, Florida has nearly 26% of drivers on the road with no insurance.

Underinsured Motorist (“UIM”) coverage is designed to cover the gap in coverage when the other driver does not have enough insurance to cover the cost of all of  your injuries. Your UIM insurance would then kick in to cover up to your policy limits, which is why you should have a generous limit on your policy.

The car accident attorneys at Daggett Shuler recommend the following UIM coverage, in order to be adequately protected:

  • UIM Bodily Injury – $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident

Later in the episode, David Daggett also participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues. Watch the video:
