The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a report linking the proliferation of electric scooters to an increase in serious injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, in urban centers. A detailed article on the study and its findings is available here.
In recent years, electric scooters—also known as e-scooters—have begun to appear in large numbers on the streets of some of the largest cities in the United States.
The CDC confirmed this rash of scooter-related injuries in a study released at the Epidemic Intelligence Service conference in Atlanta.

The Study’s Findings
According to the CDC, the injury rate among e-scooter riders was 14 injuries per 100,000 trips logged, and 45% of all e-scooter injuries involve some form of head trauma. Fractures to an upper extremity account for 27% of injuries, while 12% of injuries reported involve lower extremity fractures.
The study indicates that 29% of injuries involve first-time riders, and 18% involve a collision with a motor vehicle. In their summary, the CDC concluded many e-scooter injuries could have been prevented—or the severity of injuries could have been greatly reduced—if riders wore helmets.
Local News
Last year, both Bird and Lime arrived in Raleigh—without City Council approval. Supporters call e-scooters an affordable means of urban transportation. Opponents call them a safety hazard.
In March, both companies stated they would be removing their scooters from Raleigh in response to what they call the city’s “burdensome” regulations. While Bird has discontinued operations, Lime intends to stay through the end of July.
