Established by the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) more than 30 years ago, March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. This public awareness campaign seeks to educate the general public regarding Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs), and generate support for victims and families.
About Traumatic Brain Injury
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1.5 million U.S. citizens suffer a Traumatic Brain Injury each year. By definition, a TBI is any jolt or blow to the head which disrupts brain function. While many believe only a direct blow to the head can result in a TBI, any jolt to the body which transfers energy to the skull can cause such trauma. Symptoms include:
- Cognitive Issues
- Loss of Awareness
- Blurred Vision
- Persistent Headache
- Undue Fatigue
- Unclear Thoughts
The Mayo Clinic cites falls, vehicle collisions, explosions, acts of violence, and sports-related head injuries, (especially sports injuries suffered by children), as the most common causes of both mild and severe TBIs. For children who have suffered a mild TBI, the CDC has made guidelines for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and management available here.
Awareness is Vital
According to the BIAA, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury every nine seconds. As a result, at least 5.3 million citizens, or 1 out of every 60 people, currently live with disabilities related to or caused by a Traumatic Brain Injury. According to the BIAA’s statistics, each year:
- More than 2.5 million people sustain a TBI
- 2 million seek emergency treatment
- Nearly 280,000 TBI victims are hospitalized
- Approximately 50,000 TBIs are ultimately fatal
