Each year, approximately 1000 people die in traffic accidents in North Carolina. According to the most recent data compiled by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, traffic accidents saw an increase in recent years. Although the number of traffic accidents vary by county, it is important for all North Carolina drivers to make sure they are protected on the roadways.

Danger while Driving
Tragically, in 2010 968 people died in traffic accidents in North Carolina. This includes 85 pedestrian deaths, 11 fatal bicycle accidents, and 127 deadly motorcycle accidents all involving a motor vehicle collision.

Drunk driving was a factor in over 200 of these deaths. It is estimated that approximately 30% of all fatal accidents on America’s roadways involve alcohol or drug use.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol There were over 1424 serious automobile accidents in North Carolina in 2010 alone, an increase from the previous year. This increasing trend in car accidents in NC can be attributed to a number of factors, including a higher incidence of distracted drivers on the roadways.

In today’s modern age motorists face distractions that did not exist in earlier generations. Everyone seems to have a smartphone or tablet and unfortunately it can be all too easy to use these devices while driving. This increase in hand held mobile technology has led to a direct increase in distracted drivers on the roadways.

Protect Yourself
It is important for North Carolina residents to be prepared in the event of a car accident. Of course being the safest driver you can be is always your best bet to prevent accidents. If you follow the list of safety tips below, you will help reduce your risk of a car accident:

  • Always wear your seatbelt, no exceptions.
  • Don’t speed and stay clear of other drivers that are driving over the speed limit.
  • Be aware of erratic drivers on the road who may be impaired or distracted.
  • Make sure you stay at least 10 feet away from the vehicle in front of you in case of sudden stops.
  • Make sure to use your headlights lights at dusk.
  • Always use your turn signals.

The Right Representation Matters
If you or a loved one is the victim of a car accident that was not your fault, make sure you call an experienced personal injury attorney. Remember, the insurance companies are a for-profit business, and will try to pay out as little compensation as possible on your accident claim.  Always call an experienced personal injury lawyer after an accident before calling the insurance company. Insurance companies will often times record phone calls, hoping you will somehow say something that can be used against your claim in court.  An experienced lawyer will investigate the facts surrounding your accident will guide you through the complicated process of seeking damages.
