On Saturday, April 25th, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler Law discussed the Safe Sober Prom Night program with host Jim Longworth on Triad Today. Ainsley Williams, a sophomore at Mt. Tabor High School and the winner of the SSPN 2020 T-Shirt Contest, was their guest. Watch the segment:
Safe Sober Prom Night is celebrating its 30th year, and is the longest-running private initiative of its type in the United States. David Daggett discussed the fact that the program has become a tradition for high school students in the Triad. Its message of leadership, guidance, and direction is a critically important one for young people.
Griff Shuler talked about the t-shirt contest and the selection process. The contest is open to high school students in the Triad, and this year the program received around 150 entries. The winner is chosen by a blind selection process via committee.
Ainsley Williams, this year’s winner, shared her experience winning the contest. She was encouraged by her art teacher, Mrs. Barbara Trinh, to enter. Ainsley learned that she was the winner when David and Griff showed up at her home to surprise her and unveil her winning design. Ainsley received a $1000 scholarship, and Mrs. Trinh received a grant for $1000 for her classroom.
Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Safe Sober Prom Night program is currently in transition. While proms have been postponed or canceled, Daggett Shuler will fulfill their promise and get the t-shirts distributed somehow, some way, to the students. The message of staying safe and sober remains relevant year-round, and the atmosphere of positive peer pressure encourages young people to make good choices. Later in the episode, David Daggett also participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about many topics, including local and national political issues, along with current news items. Watch the video:
