Be Safe While Driving During the Holidays

The holiday season is one of the best times of the year to spend quality time with family, friends and loved ones. However, we should also remember to be especially cautious on the roads during the holidays.

The increase in holiday trips, office parties and celebrations means that there are more drivers than normal out on the roads. There is also a greater risk of being involved in an accident involving an intoxicated driver.

Unfortunately, accidents involving drunk drivers see an annual increase during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. Throughout the holiday season, it is important to remember a few simple rules while out on the road:

  • Drive Defensively: Be cautious on the road and do not take unnecessary risks. Accidents involving drunk drivers can happen in the blink of an eye, so maintain a constant speed and keep a safe following distance behind all cars on the road. If you notice a car swerving or driving erratically, avoid that vehicle at all costs and contact the authorities.
  • Plan Ahead: If you are planning to attend a holiday party hosted by family, friends or colleagues, plan your night in advance and make sure you have a safe way home. Assign a designated driver for the evening, or take a taxi or car service such as Uber. This is a crucial detail of your night, so don’t wait until the last minute to plan!
  • NEVER Drink and Drive: If you have consumed any alcohol, you CANNOT safely operate a vehicle. Nearly all drunk driving accidents happen when an intoxicated person thinks that they are still “okay” to drive. If you have been drinking, get a sober friend to drive you home, call a cab, or make other arrangements. NEVER drink and drive.

If all Piedmont-Triad motorists follow these simple rules this month, we can help ensure a safer holiday season.
