April Raises Awareness of Distracted Driving

distracted driver

Each day, car accidents caused by distracted driving kill more than nine Americans, and leave 100 more injured. For this reason, the National Safety Council (NSC) has declared April Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Observing Distracted Driving Awareness Month provides an opportunity to recognize the dangers of distracted driving and eliminate preventable deaths.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute have recently released the results of a survey on distracted driving in the U.S..

About the Survey Results

IIHS research indicates cell phone usage contributed to more than 800 crash deaths on U.S. roads in 2017. An IIHS roadside survey indicates motorists were 57% more likely to use a cell phone versus a survey from 2014.

The percentage of motorists caught using cellphones went up from 2.3% in 2014 to 3.4% in 2018. At the same time, a 2018 national survey conducted by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals that 64% of those who responded tell us distracted driving is a bigger concern as compared to three years ago.

Identifying Distractions

Roughly 23% of drivers observed were engaged in at least one distracting activity beyond cellphone use. These included:

  • Manipulating the Car’s Audio System
  • Manipulating Climate-Control Systems
  • Manipulating Electronic Devices
  • Talking or Singing While Driving
  • Operating Other Vehicle Systems
  • Eating or Drinking While Driving
  • Personal Grooming While Driving
  • Reading Printed Materials
