On Saturday, February 17th, attorney David Daggett appeared on Triad Today to share exciting news about the future of the Safe Sober program and a partnership with the William G. White, Jr. YMCA. Richard Daniels, the Y’s Executive Director, and Meredith Lloyd, Assistant Director, joined David to discuss what the new partnership means for the Triad’s youth.
The Daggett Shuler Safe Sober Program has been a staple of high school life in the Triad for over three decades. Now in its 34th year, the mission of the program remains the same – to encourage young people to make the right choice when it comes to decisions about drug and alcohol use. The program encourages positive peer pressure to influence these life-changing choices.
Safe Sober is proud to announce a new partnership with the William G. White, Jr. YMCA to create the Safe Sober Teen Center by Daggett Shuler. The center is a safe space for teens to go after school. It provides them with a place to get homework help, relax, grab a snack, and gain mentorship provided by volunteers, including representatives from Daggett Shuler.
The Safe Sober Teen Center addresses some immediate needs within the community. Mr. Daniels discussed the fact that teens are sneaking into the Ys simply to have a place to be after school is over. While the YMCA offers the “Reaching Our Potential” program, which provides teenagers with free access to the Y facilities and programming based on recommendations from community leaders (guidance counselors, clergy, police officers), the need is still great. The kids want a safe space.
To that end, the Safe Sober Teen Center by Daggett Shuler provides opportunities for young people to learn new skills while in a fun, healthy environment. There is a new Teen Center Coordinator who is creating programs around the kids’ needs in order to set them up for success. Some of the offerings are resume building, interview skills, and help with college applications.
The attorneys at Daggett Shuler are excited to be involved in this great new initiative. They will be volunteering their time at the Safe Sober Teen Center, offering mentorship and advice to the attendees. By supporting our young people, we all work together to help build up the next generation and create a healthier Triad.
Later in the episode, David also participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues.
