Daggett Shuler’s commitment to community service is a cornerstone of the Daggett Shuler mission. They shared more information on a recent episode of Triad Today.
On Saturday, September 28th, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler appeared on Triad Today to help celebrate the show’s 1000th episode. After 8 years of partnering with the show, they’ve covered many topics. The common thread among them is Daggett Shuler’s commitment to supporting and encouraging the Triad community through a number of initiatives. David and Griff discussed just a few of their community programs and why service is a cornerstone of the Daggett Shuler mission.
One of Daggett Shuler’s longest-running initiatives is the Safe Sober program. Now in its 3rd decade, the program encourages the entire community to “make the right choice” when it comes to decisions about drug and alcohol use. Originally focused on reaching high school students at prom season, the program has reached over 600,000 young people. The annual t-shirt design contest provides students with the opportunity to have their design featured on thousands of shirts and to win a $1000 scholarship. Safe Sober has expanded its reach over the years, and this year opened the Safe Sober Teen Center at the William G. White, Jr. YMCA. The center serves underprivileged students with support, enrichment, and a safe place to spend their time.
Another way Daggett Shuler serves the Triad’s young students is with their Back-to-School Backpack Program each fall. This program provides backpacks filled with school supplies to in-need students at local elementary schools. This allows the kids to get the school year started on the right foot, and positioned for academic success. Since its inception 10 years ago, the program has also branched out to provide additional backpacks to the YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program.
A new partnership that Daggett Shuler is excited to be a part of is Fusion Soccer/Beyond Sports’s Operation Triad Play in conjunction with the Winston-Salem Police Department. This program puts sports equipment in police cruisers, allowing the officers to forge meaningful relationships with the community’s young people.
Supporting youth is not a new cause for Daggett Shuler by any means. In fact, David Daggett is a longtime supporter and participant in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. This program provides “littles” – young people in need of support, encouragement, and guidance – with a “big” – an adult who can provide those things and develop a positive relationship with the child. David has been a “big” since 1982, and continues to be close with his “little,” even after 40+ years! It may in fact be the longest-running relationship in the history of the program.
As you can see, Daggett Shuler’s commitment to serving the community is a major part of the firm’s mission. It isn’t only focused on youth, though – looking after the entire Triad is important, especially at the holidays. Daggett Shuler’s food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC is another annual firm tradition. In addition to feeding hungry residents, Second Harvest provides many valuable resources, including education about nutrition, access to food from local farms, and even a culinary training program.
Later in the episode, David Daggett participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues.
