Daggett Shuler’s Annual Back-to-School Backpack Program is a partnership with community organizations to help young students start the school year off right.
On Saturday, August 16th, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler appeared on Triad Today with Chief William Penn of the Winston-Salem Police Department to discuss how Daggett Shuler and the WSPD have partnered for over a decade to help kids get the school year started right.
Now in its 11th year, the Daggett Shuler Back-to-School Backpack Program—presented in partnership with the Winston-Salem Police Department and the William G. White, Jr. YMCA—provides backpacks and essential school supplies to local students in need.
Co-founded by David Daggett, the program has grown into a hallmark of the back-to-school season in the Triad, strengthening connections between community organizations and local schools. Each year, school administrators express appreciation for the support as students return to the classroom prepared and ready to learn.
Five Winston-Salem/Forsyth County elementary schools receive 50 backpacks filled with the supplies students need to succeed. To ensure dignity and inclusivity, the backpacks are intentionally logo-free, preventing recipients from being singled out by their peers.
School counselors and administrators thoughtfully identify the students who will benefit most from the program. Daggett Shuler understands how important the first day of school is for young learners—and how arriving equipped with the same tools as their classmates can foster confidence, belonging, and a positive start to the year.
“We see this program as an investment in our future. By helping students start the school year prepared, we’re giving them the tools they need to succeed and showing them that their community believes in their potential,” says Chief William Penn of the WSPD.
In addition to the backpacks provided to the schools, Daggett Shuler also supplies the William G. White, Jr. YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program with 75 stuffed bags. The Bright Beginnings program allows in-need students to get new clothes and supplies for their first day. Daggett Shuler is proud to support such a great cause and program.
As Richard Daniels, Executive Director of the William G. White, Jr. YMCA states, “It’s bigger than school supplies- it’s about dignity, opportunity, and reminding every child that they matter. Thanks to our donors, partners, and especially Daggett Shuler Attorneys at Law and the WSPD, we’re able to walk alongside families and make a real impact.”
Later in the episode, Attorney David Daggett participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues.
