Drug and Alcohol Facts Week: What You Should Know

drug-and-alcohol-counseling

Part of our mission here at Daggett Shuler and Safe Sober is to educate the young people of the Triad about the dangers of drug and alcohol use. This is why, this month, we observe National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, or NDAFW, is an annual and week-long health observance to “shatter the myths” of drug and alcohol abuse by educating teens about the scientific facts of addiction. This week, our nation invites scientists, students, healthcare providers, educators, and community partners to participate in the dialogue.

The History of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week

NDAFW was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). They began to organize educational events to educate teens about the scientific facts of drug abuse and addiction. In 2016, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) joined the conversation and became a partner in the week-long event, introducing alcohol abuse into the discussion. NIDA and NIAA, both parts of the National Institutes of Health, continue to work together to engage and educate communities on the topic of substance misuse and abuse among youth.

Safe Sober: Our Contribution to National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week

During NDAFW, and year-round, our team at Daggett Shuler strives to educate our youth about the dangers of teen drug and alcohol use. Through our Safe Sober program, over 600,000 students have taken the pledge to stay safe and sober on prom night. For more than 30 years, this program has helped prevent drug and alcohol related accidents and destruction every year, and ensures a promising future for the young people of North Carolina.
