Winston-Salem, NC (May 24th, 2021) โ The Winston-Salem, North Carolina based nonprofit, Safe Sober is pleased to announce that Samuel Rocha, a senior at Career Center High and RJ Reynolds High, has won the Safe Sober T-Shirt Design Contest for 2021.
At a surprise presentation at Career Center High, the winning design was unveiled. Samuel was presented with the first shirt off the press, framed for display. Honored guests joining attorneys Griff Shuler and David Daggett included Winston-Salem Mayor, Allen Joines; Assistant Chief of the Winston-Salem Police Department, Lieutenant William Penn; other local dignitaries; and media.
Samuel will use his prize of a $1,000 scholarship to support his attendance of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he will study graphic design. Safe Sober also honored the classroom of the winning student with a $1000 grant. His graphic arts teacher, Mrs. Stephanie Messer, will use the grant money for supplies for her Graphic Design classroom to ensure that her students have all the tools they need to succeed in class.
Safe Sober is a non-profit organization co-founded in 1991 by David Daggett of Daggett Shuler, Attorneys at Law and was originally known as Safe Sober Prom Night. โThe goal of Safe Sober is to provide ongoing awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol and to encourage positive peer pressure to reduce underage drinking and drug use,โ explains Griff Shuler.
Now celebrating in its 31st year, expanding the Safe Sober program encourages high school students to make the most of their young lives throughout their high school experience. The program is currently active in 50 high schools across 10 counties throughout the greater Triad region of North Carolina. To date, more than 600,000 students have been touched by Safe Sober.
As part of the Safe Sober program, Triad students submit their own designs for consideration to be printed on the front of 7,500 t-shirts. These shirts are given to area high school seniors. Samuel is the sole winner of the competition selected from over 150 contest entries from all across the Triad. His name is printed on the back of each t-shirt.ย This year, schools are incorporating these t-shirts into their graduation festivities, to encourage seniors to be safe and sober through positive peer pressure during this graduation season.
โThis crazy COVID period has provided an amazing opportunity to enhance the Safe Sober Program for our students and the community. Todayโs launch of the enhanced Safe Sober will positively affect our students, resulting in a continued betterment of our communities. Congratulations and thank you to all who joined us to award the 2021 T-Shirt Design Winner Samuel Rocha.โ
