Attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler recently appeared on Triad Today with Carver High School and Career Center junior Christopher Pegelow, this year’s Safe Sober T-Shirt Design Contest winner. Watch the segment to learn more:
The Daggett Shuler Safe Sober program has become a staple of growing up in the Triad over the past few decades. Founded by Attorney David Daggett in 1990, the Safe Sober Prom Night program was originally focused on encouraging high school students to pledge to stay sober on prom night. As time has gone on, issues surrounding drug and alcohol abuse are now affecting younger and younger groups. To address these changing issues, the program is now known as Safe Sober and has become a year-round, community-wide initiative.
The Safe Sober mission is all about providing leadership, guidance, and direction to students. This is achieved through the program’s “three pillars:” awareness, positive peer pressure, and generating support for young people.
One of the ways that Safe Sober helps to generate awareness is through their annual T-Shirt Design Contest. Local students have the opportunity to submit a design which incorporates the Safe Sober name and its motto – make the right choice. Entries are then blindly reviewed by a committee and the winner is vetted through a conversation with the student’s principal. The winning design is printed on over 15,000 shirts, featuring the winner’s name on the back, which are then distributed across schools and community events throughout the Triad.
The 2025 Safe Sober T-Shirt Contest winner is Christopher Pegelow, a junior at Carver High School and Career Center. He became interested in art through his mother, but didn’t feel like a pencil was quite the right medium for his work. Christopher became involved in digital art and works hard at his craft every day, and has built an online portfolio. He researched past winning Safe Sober T-Shirt designs and studied logo design to prepare to create his entry. Looking ahead, Christopher would like to attend NC State and his goal is to major in graphic design or robotics engineering.
Later in the episode, David Daggett participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Rosemary Plybon. They discussed current news items and political issues.
