Riding a motorcycle is an exciting and exhilarating way to experience the beautiful scenery of the Piedmont Triad and the surrounding areas. However, it is vitally important for motorcyclists to take precautions to help protect their own safety every time they rev up and go out on the road.

Motorcycle and bicycle riders are exposed to numerous potential dangers that automobile drivers don’t have to think about. Here are some troubling statistics about motorcycle accidents:

  • Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists are 26x more likely to be fatally injured in a traffic accident compared to occupants of a passenger vehicle.
  • 40% of motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes in 2013 were alcohol-impaired.
  • In states without universal helmet laws, 59% of motorcyclists killed were not wearing helmets, as compared to only 8% of riders in States with universal helmet laws.
  • Motorcyclists speeding while not wearing protective gear, such as helmets, more than double their risk of a potentially fatal motorcycle accident.

Motorcycles and bicycles offer very little protection to riders, and mistakes by other vehicles often place bikers at greater risk for suffering serious injuries in an accident. When out on the road make sure that you’re equipped with proper safety gear, have the appropriate training, and understand the road rules for bikers.
