School Bus Safety to Be Featured on Triad Today

students boarding a school bus

School is in session once again, and school busses are back on the roads. While their frequent stops may present an inconvenience to commuters in a hurry, drivers should always keep the safety of students in mind. Attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler, Attorneys at Law, will be appearing on Triad Today on September 21st to discuss school bus safety and what you can do as a driver to ensure that kids stay safe on their way to school. Triad Today airs on WXLV at 7:30 a.m.

Griff and David will be talking about the specifics of North Carolina school bus laws, including when you must stop for a bus. Some things to keep in mind:

Both directions of traffic must stop for a stopped school bus when:

  • On a 2-lane road
  • On a 2-lane road with a center turn lane
  • On a 4-lane road without a median

Traffic must stop when following a bus stop:

  • On a divided highway with 4 or more lanes and median separation
  • On a roadway of 4 or more lanes with a center turning lane

Failing to stop for a stopped school bus can have serious ramifications. Not stopping could place a child directly in harm’s way. Taking the time to pay attention and follow the rules of the road helps to ensure that kids get to school safely.

North Carolina takes student safety very seriously. There are harsh consequences for passing a stopped school bus, which is considered a class 1 misdemeanor.  The maximum punishment for a class 1 misdemeanor is 120 days in jail. There is also a mandatory $500 fine, and 5 points would be added to a guilty party’s license.
