Raising Awareness on Chronic Disease Day
Chronic Disease Day serves as a call to action for greater understanding, support, and advocacy for issues surrounding disabilities.

Every year on July 10th, Chronic Disease Day is observed, raising awareness about the millions of Americans living with chronic health conditions. At Daggett Shuler, we see firsthand the impact these diseases can have on individuals and families. This day serves not only as a reminder of the challenges faced by those affected but also as a call to action for greater understanding, support, and advocacy.
What Is a Chronic Disease?
A chronic disease is a long-lasting condition that often requires ongoing medical attention and can limit daily activities. According to the CDC, chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They affect 6 in 10 adults nationwide and can severely impact quality of life.
Chronic Diseases and Social Security Disability Benefits
Many people suffering from chronic illnesses are unable to work due to the debilitating nature of their conditions. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides support through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
However, the disability benefits application process can be lengthy and complex. That’s where the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program comes in.
What Are Compassionate Allowances?
The Compassionate Allowances initiative is designed to quickly identify diseases and conditions that meet SSA’s standards for disability benefits. This program accelerates the process for individuals with the most severe conditions, often including certain chronic diseases.
Chronic Diseases That May Qualify for Compassionate Allowances
While the Compassionate Allowances list includes a variety of rare diseases and cancers, additional chronic conditions can also qualify for expedited processing. Some examples include:
- ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
- Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease
- Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Mixed Dementia
- Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Liver Cancer)
- Multiple System Atrophy
- Certain types of Muscular Dystrophy
- Primary Progressive Aphasia
- Dravet Syndrome
These are just a few of the more than 250 conditions on the Compassionate Allowances list. A comprehensive list can be found on the SSA website, which is updated annually.
