IVC Filter Lawsuit

About IVC Filters

The filters are small cage like devices placed in the inferior vena cava (IVC). This is the main vessel that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. The devices are designed to capture blood clots in order to prevent a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) from occurring.

In 2010 the FDA released a safety communication warning concerning the IVC filters. The safety warning came after thousands reported severe adverse effects from the IVC filters, and in 2014 the FDA released an updated communication regarding the warning about the risks involved.

Serious side effects reported by the FDA include:

  • Fracture of the filter
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Perforation, puncture or other serious damages to the heart, lungs or vena cava
  • Severe pain in the heart, chest or elsewhere in the body
