Food Insecurity: How You Can Help on Triad Today

November-2020-Triad-Today-Panelists

On Saturday, November 21st, attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler Law appeared on Triad Today to discuss food insecurity in the Triad, and how people can help combat this very serious issue. Eric Aft, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, was their guest.  Watch the segment:

Hunger and food insecurity is a major issue in North Carolina. Pre-pandemic statistics show that 1 in 5 children, and 1 in 7 people overall, face food insecurity across the state. Unfortunately, this problem has only increased over the course of 2020. With children learning virtually and unable to access school meals, and people out of work, the situation has become dire for some families across the Triad.

The Second Harvest Food Bank is working with schools and nearly 300 local partners to get nutritious meals distributed in unique ways. They have partnered with local school systems to not only distribute meals to children, but also to make sure they have supplies they need to succeed in virtual learning.

The need for local support to make sure the entire community is fed is great, even moreso in the current climate. If you’d like to get involved, there are several ways you can help:

  • Monetary donations are always welcomed
  • There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer your time
  • Consider hosting a food drive or fundraising event

Later in the episode, David Daggett also participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They talked about current news items and political issues. Watch the video:
