A sad and unfortunate incident took place Wednesday morning on Highway 14 just north of Greensboro. After stopping to assist two motorists stranded on the side of the Highway, an off-duty Emergency Medical Services worker was struck and killed by a tractor trailer driver who lost control of his vehicle while traveling at excessive speeds.
Authorities say that a patch of ice on Highway 14 caused two separate drivers to lose control of their vehicles and wind up in a ditch on the side of the road. When the EMS worker pulled over and exited his vehicle to assist the drivers, a tractor trailer hit the same patch of ice, jack-knifing and colliding with the other two vehicles.
The EMS worker was fatally injured in the collision and the other two drivers were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle due to the fact that he was travelling at excessive speeds at the time of the crash.
The fact that the EMS employee was off-duty at the time of the accident, and had only stopped to offer help to fellow motorists, makes this accident all the more tragic. However, incidents like this also serve as a reminder that tractor-trailers are dangerous vehicles that can be difficult to control, and motorists should remain aware of their presence on the road at all times.
