David Daggett Discusses 35th Annual YMCA Mistletoe 5K to Fight Childhood Obesity on Triad Today

David Daggett Triad Today

Attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler of Daggett Shuler Law recently visited Triad Today to discuss efforts made to combat child obesity with host Jim Longworth. Their special guest was Erin Craver, Executive Director of the YMCA of Kernersville and Race Director for the YMCA Mistletoe 5K. Watch the clip:

The Growing Epidemic of Childhood Obesity

Over the last 30 years, childhood obesity has quadrupled. Some 20% of American children are considered obese, and approximately one-third qualify as overweight. The likelihood that overweight or obese children will carry excess weight into adulthood increases their risk for serious physical and emotional complications later in life—including diabetes, heart disease, and depression.

About Mistletoe 5K

The 35th Annual YMCA Mistletoe 5K to Stop Childhood Obesity benefits the YMCA’s efforts to fight childhood obesity. This year, nearly 3000 runners representing more than 24 states are expected to participate. Details on the race—which David Daggett is scheduled to announce—are available here.

The Mistletoe 5K is one of the oldest and largest races in Winston-Salem, attracting hundreds of runners. The December 1st race includes a fun run, half marathon, and 5K. The event focuses on the YMCA’s efforts to promote active play and learning—including swimming and other physical activities—as they teach children to live healthy lifestyles.

Participants can pre-register here. Race-day registration starts at 6:00am and ends promptly at 7:00am. The fun run starts at 7:30am. The half marathon and 5K events start at 8:00am and 8:15am, respectively. Anyone with questions can e-mail mistletoe@ymcanwnc.org for information.
