Coach Bill Hayes: A Living Legend on Triad Today
Coach Bill Hayes has led football teams through his exemplary coaching at Wake Forest, Winston-Salem State University, and North Carolina A&T, achieving multiple championships.

Attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler recently appeared on Triad Today alongside Coach Bill Hayes, former athletic director at Winston-Salem State University. They had a lively discussion about Coach Hayes’s career and how he has supported student athletes throughout his career. Watch the segment to learn more:
Coach Hayes’s career has certainly been impressive; in fact, both David and Griff described him as a “living legend.” He led football teams through his exemplary coaching at Wake Forest, Winston-Salem State University, and North Carolina A&T, achieving multiple championships. He has also been inducted into several Halls of Fame, including the Black College Football Hall of Fame and the NCUU Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Hayes has also been a trailblazer, as he was the first Black football coach in the ACC.
Even after his retirement, Coach Hayes is still dedicated to encouraging and supporting students. In 2021, the Bill and Carolyn Hayes Foundation was developed. The foundation’s mission is to raise funds and awareness surrounding HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) students and athletic programs. The foundation promotes and runs the Bill and Carolyn Hayes Scholarship Endowment which provides scholarships to HBCU students. To donate to this great cause, visit the foundation’s website. Later in the episode, David Daggett participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Dr. Don Martin. They discussed current news items and political issues.
