A School Bus Accident Raises Bus Safety Concerns

Approximately 794,950 students throughout North Carolina use the school bus to get to and from school each day. The average bus ride is 24 minutes with 14,104 school buses operating each day.

An accident involving a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school bus carrying 6 kids occurred earlier this week. A driver ran a stop sign while turning left colliding with the bus. Thankfully no students were hurt, and the bus driver was released with minor injuries.

The driver was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign.

School buses are one of the safest ways for students to travel, but drivers need to be cautious when sharing the road with a bus. School buses make frequent stops, drive at a slower speed, and require more room to maneuver.

Here are some important safety tips to remember when sharing the road with a school bus:

  • Give Children Room – school buses make frequent stops to pick up and drop off children at designated locations. It is important to keep your distance – 10 ft around a school bus! Always come to a complete stop and wait until the children are safely off the bus.
  • Never Pass a Bus from Behind – make sure to never pass a bus from behind or either direction if on an undivided road. Make sure to properly signal so the driver knows you are passing.
  • Stay Alert – children are unpredictable, it is important to be alert when driving near a bus and make sure to be cautious of the children.

This was a preventable accident reminding us how important it is to always be alert when driving.
