School buses are one of the safest ways for students to travel, but drivers need to be cautious when sharing the road with a bus. School buses make frequent stops, drive at a slower speed, and require more room to maneuver.
Here are some important safety tips to remember when sharing the road with a school bus:
- Give Children Room – school buses make frequent stops to pick up and drop off children at designated locations. It is important to keep your distance – 10 ft around a school bus! Always come to a complete stop and wait until the children are safely off the bus.
- Never Pass a Bus from Behind – make sure to never pass a bus from behind or either direction if on an undivided road. Make sure to properly signal so the driver knows you are passing.
- Stay Alert – children are unpredictable, it is important to be alert when driving near a bus and make sure to be cautious of the children.
This was a preventable accident reminding us how important it is to always be alert when driving.
