Attorneys David Daggett and Griff Shuler recently appeared on Triad Today with Richard Daniels, Executive Director of the William G. White, Jr. YMCA. Daggett Shuler and the Safe Sober program have partnered with the YMCA to create the Safe Sober Teen Center by Daggett Shuler, which provides a safe, positive environment for teens to go to after school. Watch the segment to learn more:
Now in its 35th year, Safe Sober’s mission is to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The program promotes the power of positive peer pressure and the community’s participation in wrapping arms of support around these kids.
When Safe Sober was initially implemented, the focus was on high schools and prom season, when alcohol-related accidents among teenagers typically increase. As the time has progressed, drug and alcohol issues have influenced younger and younger groups. In response, Safe Sober has evolved to also include middle-school-aged kids. The program achieves this in part through the partnership that has led to the Safe Sober Teen Center by Daggett Shuler. These partnerships encourage youth to make the right choice when it comes to difficult decisions.
The Safe Sober Teen Center by Daggett Shuler became a reality when Mr. Daniels approached David about partnering together in a way that would benefit the community. A longtime friend of Mr. Daniels, David recognized the potential for a wealth of benefits for students.
The mission of the YMCA – helping all people to reach their full potential – aligns well with Safe Sober’s aim, and the partnership ensures that their shared missions reach young people in the Triad.
The Teen Center, alongside YMCA programming, provides opportunities for students to learn about healthy lifestyles, life skills, financial awareness, and social interactions. It allows kids to thrive in a structured, positive, and safe environment. This is so important for the entire community, as young people are our future. The young people who attend the Teen Center are seeking guidance and direction in a safe space, and the folks at the YMCA and Daggett Shuler consider themselves fortunate to be able to contribute to providing that for them.
Later in the episode, David Daggett participated in the Roundtable discussion with Ogi Overman and Keith Grandberry. They discussed current news items and political issues.
