March Is Traumatic Brain Injury Month, Show Your Support By Wearing Green!

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, contributing to approximately 30% of all injury deaths. The result of a brain injury can be devastating and life altering for families and patients.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month – green is the color of the ribbon that supports brain injury awareness. A TBI is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI may range from “mild” (a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to “severe” (an extended period of unconsciousness or memory loss after an injury).  When a TBI occurs and it is mild, it is commonly referred to as a concussion.

From March through May officers have been given a more relaxed grooming standard in order to raise awareness for traumatic brain injury. Allowing them to highlight their hair green and wear green extensions, wear full beards, and even wear green nail polish or decorative nail art to show their support.

This educational, awareness campaign is in support of an officer that is currently battling TBI from a head injury during a home improvement project.

Chief Wayne Scott shows his support by saying, “I think displaying this color will certainly cause members of the public to ask questions about it. That opens the door for us to talk about how we are supporting one of our employees who is fighting to recover from this life-changing injury.”
